What is on this page?

Four free Halloween games for toddlers and preschoolers, all built around the same twelve friendly Halloween words: pumpkin, jack-o'-lantern, ghost, bat, black cat, witch hat, broom, cauldron, spider, owl, moon and candy. Every picture smiles, every word is spoken out loud, and nothing jumps out or makes a scary noise, so the games work for a two-year-old as well as a five-year-old.

Which game should we play first?

  1. Start with the Halloween Flashcards. They name all twelve pictures out loud, one at a time, so your child has heard every word before the games ask for them.
  2. Then the Pumpkin Hunt. It is all tapping and no reading: tap a pumpkin, find who is hiding, hear their name. It suits the youngest players best, and every round hides different friends.
  3. The Matching Game asks a little more. Your child drags each picture onto its name, which is where a three- or four-year-old starts to connect a picture with a written word.
  4. Count the Pumpkins is for counting practice. The page counts along out loud, one pumpkin at a time, then says the answer.

For grown-ups

Halloween can be a lot for small children: masks, loud decorations and older kids in costume. These games keep the fun parts and leave out the frightening ones. Talking about the words afterwards helps too. Spotting a real pumpkin on a doorstep, or pointing at the moon on the walk home, carries the game off the screen.
