Choosing a game

Start from what your child enjoys, not from the subject. A child who loves animals will count ducks happily and sit through letters that come with an animal picture, and the learning is the same. The matching games suit children who like to move things around; the hunts suit the youngest players, who only need to tap.

Then follow the order in each group: picture games first, then matching, then sounds and tracing. If a game feels hard, go back one step for a few days rather than pushing on; a game that feels easy is doing its job.

Common questions

What are the best learning games for a 3 year old?
Picture-led games with one simple action: the Animal and Fruit Matchers, Same or Different, the seasonal hunts and the A to Z flashcards. Tracing and the letter-sound games usually click a little later, around four.
Are these learning games free?
Yes, in a web browser with no login. Several play with no limit; the others play through once a day for free. The Flashcards Kids app has every game with no limit, and you can try it free for 7 days.
Do the games work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Every game works with a finger on a phone or tablet and with a mouse on a computer, and every word is spoken, so children who cannot read yet can play on their own.
How long should a young child play learning games?
A few minutes at a time. Short, regular sessions work better than long ones, and stopping while your child still wants more is what brings them back next time.
