How letter tracing works

Each letter takes a minute or two and is spoken out loud, so your child does not need to read. Here is the letter A:

  1. Pick a letter. Tap a tile and the tracing screen opens.
  2. Hear it. The narrator says "Trace the letter A!"
  3. Start at green 1. Numbered dots show where each stroke begins, and in which order.
  4. Follow the dotted line. With a finger, a mouse or a stylus. Wobbly lines are fine.
  5. Stuck? After a few quiet seconds a hand traces the strokes to show the way.
  6. Stars! Then trace the same letter again or move on to the next one.

For parents

Is letter tracing free?

Yes. Letters A to E trace free in your browser, with no login and no ads. Every letter, plus all the flashcards and games, is in the Flashcards Kids app, which you can try free for 7 days.

What age is letter tracing for?

About three to six. Three-year-olds enjoy following the dots with a finger; four- and five-year-olds start to learn where each stroke begins, which is what makes handwriting easier later.

Does tracing have to be neat?

No. A letter counts as done once your child has gone over most of it, so wobbly lines are fine. It is about learning the shape and the order of the strokes, not neat handwriting.

Should my child trace with a finger or a pencil?

Both help. A finger on a screen is the easiest way to learn the shape and the stroke order; tracing on paper with a chunky crayon builds the hand strength for writing. Doing the same letter both ways works well.

Is it capital or lowercase letters?

Capital letters. They are made of straighter lines and are usually the first letters children learn to recognise and write.
