Sorting things into groups is early abstract thinking: a dog and a cow look nothing alike, yet both are animals. Children usually sort by what they can see first and by what something is later. Saying the category aloud as they tap — "a bus is a vehicle" — is what moves it along.
Common questions
What age can children sort into categories?
Simple sorting by an obvious group usually appears between three and four. Children often manage animals before food, because animals share visible features while foods do not.
How can we practise this away from a screen?
Sorting the shopping, the toy box or the laundry works the same way. Naming the group out loud each time is the part that matters, not the objects.
