Saying "one, two, three" from memory comes earlier than understanding that the last number said is how many there are — that idea is called cardinality, and it usually clicks somewhere between three and four. Touching each object once while counting is what builds it, so let your child tap slowly rather than racing to five.

What age should a child count to five?

Most children recite one to five somewhere around three, and count five real objects accurately a little later. Reciting and counting are different skills, and the gap between them is normal.

Why count objects instead of just saying the numbers?

Touching one object per number is what connects the word to a quantity. A child who can chant to ten but recounts the same toy twice is still learning that each thing gets exactly one number.
