Counting up to ten in a row is partly memory: your child has to hold where they got to while looking for the next one. Rows of three break that up, so ten is three groups and one left over rather than an unbroken line. If they lose track halfway, that is what is happening, and restarting from one is the right instinct.
Common questions
How do we practise counting away from a screen?
Count parked cars on a walk, or wheels, or front doors. Anything a child can point at one by one works, and cars have the advantage of being interesting.
Should we count past ten?
Not yet. Ten is the sequence school builds on, and counting ten cars accurately is worth much more than reciting to twenty without pointing at anything.
