Stars are worth counting precisely because they are plain. An apple has a stalk and a highlight and a shadow; a star is one flat shape repeated, so nothing distracts from how many there are. If your child is doing well here but struggling on the picture decks, the counting is fine and the pictures are the load.
Common questions
Is counting shapes easier than counting objects?
Usually, yes. A plain repeated shape gives a child nothing to look at except the number of them, so it isolates the counting from everything else.
When can children count stars in the sky?
Much later. Counting things you cannot touch or point at is a harder skill than counting objects in front of you, and it depends on already counting well by pointing.
