Each card shows a group of cars and asks how many there are. Cars are everywhere a child already looks, which makes this one of the few counting sets that carries straight off the screen and onto the next walk.

This is the deck to take outside. Counting cars on a street, in a car park or on a shelf at home is the same skill with the screen removed, and a child who counts five on the page and five on the pavement has understood something more general than either. Start with parked ones — moving traffic is much harder.

Common questions

How do we practise counting away from a screen?

Count parked cars on a walk, or wheels, or front doors. Anything a child can point at one by one works, and cars have the advantage of being interesting.

Why does my child manage five but not eight?

Up to about four or five, children see how many there are without counting. Past that they have to count one at a time and keep track, which is a slower and more effortful skill that arrives later.
