Real stars are the one thing on this site a child cannot point at, which is worth knowing: counting things out of reach is genuinely harder and comes later. On screen they can touch each one, and that is the version to practise first. Outside, count something close by instead.
Common questions
Is counting shapes easier than counting objects?
Usually, yes. A plain repeated shape gives a child nothing to look at except the number of them, so it isolates the counting from everything else.
Does the arrangement of the stars matter?
Yes, more than most people expect. The same seven stars in a neat three-three-one are far easier than seven scattered, because the rows give a child somewhere to restart from.
